Access Tampa!

Bold prayers honor God and God honors bold prayers!

Around 9 months ago, God began challenging my wife and me to dream bigger dreams. Your dreams are unbelievably important, because how you dream shapes how you pray, and how you pray determines who you become.

As we prayed, we both felt like God was calling us to enlarge our “circle.” To shuffle the deck, and to reorganize our church in a way to reach way more people.

Yesterday we announced at Access that we’re going to start multiplying. From day one, our desire has been to be a church that continues to multiply itself by starting new churches. Jesus said it this way: “…you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) Jerusalem was the city they were in. Judea and Samaria were their country. To the ends of the earth… well, that one makes sense!

Through lots of prayer and counseling, we’re excited to announce that our “circle” is getting bigger. Our vision and dream is to see Access Church become a church with locations all over the greater Tampa area.

Think about how exciting this will be:

  • One day, you show up at the airport to go on a missions trip, and find yourself meeting other members of our same church, who have the same heart to serve others as you do.
  • One day, we’ll join with Access Church campuses from all over the Tampa region to have an incredible, united Night of Worship!
  • One day, all of our campuses will converge on one location, and hundreds or thousands of us will join to serve and bless a city!
  • One day, you’ll have a friend or family member move to the greater Tampa Bay area, and you’ll be able to invite them to our church, even though you may live 45 minutes away from them. We’ll be the same church, with the same excellence in Worship, Children’s Ministry, Creativity, and Messages – just dispersed.

Loved this response!

The truth is, the more I think and pray about it, the more excited I get. Since making the announcement, dozens of Access members have had unique, beautiful responses:

  • One guy told me his job is transferring him to Tampa. He’s been worried and praying about finding a church there. Now we’ll be there and he can help us launch it!
  • One lady told me that God has given her a specific burden for the people of a certain community in Tampa. We’ll be starting a location right next door. It was a direct answer to her prayer.
  • One family has been driving an hour each week to attend Access, and at one point had actually began searching for a new church closer to home. After a year of searching, they committed to making the drive each week back to Lakeland, only to find out we’re starting a second location in their neighborhood.
  • One guy told me last night that he has a friend that he’s been talking to about God for years. He “just happens” to live right where we’re starting a new location.

The stories go on and on. The bottom line is this. We exist to lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Everything we do is about that one simple truth.

I believe with all of my heart that this is the start of something big… Something bigger than we can even imagine.

Over the next few days, I’ll be blogging lots of posts about what this means and what it looks like for us as a church. I’ll answer lots of the questions you have. I’ll let you know how you can specifically pray and help us. I’ll be explaining the process.

For now, please start by dreaming bigger dreams with us! I know that God has bigger plans for our church than we can even begin to imagine. Together, I believe He’s going to do something so big that He gets the credit for it!

I love you. I’m excited to start this journey with you!

Here is the video message from yesterday. The Tampa announcement starts around 22:45.

Silence.

Over the last several months, I’ve intentionally created space and silence in my life. Lis and I have been praying about some major initiatives for our church, and I wanted to create as much space as I could for God to speak to us.

As my friend, Perry Noble said, “In order to hear from God clearly, you must get out of your routine.”

Just wanted you to know why I’ve been so quiet here. That’s all changing now. I can’t wait to share this new process with you!

New Thru 60 – Beginning September 1

I’m excited to announce something I am doing. I hope you’ll join me in this adventure.

I’m reading the New Testament in 60 Days. We’re calling it New Thru 60. It kicks off on Thursday, September 1.

If you’ve been a Christian for more than a week, you’ve probably tried a reading plan. One of the problems I’ve had with Bible reading plans is that I’ll start strong, then miss a day, then miss another day, then I’m so far behind that I give up. One thing I love about New Thru 60 is this. The reading is relatively light – only about 4 chapters per day (about 15 minutes of reading), and there are 7 “catch up” days in the mix. This gives you time to catch up if you miss a day for any reason.

I’m asking God to clearly speak to me through this, and I hope you’ll join me.

Here are the requirements:

1. Leave a comment on my blog to let me know you’re in. I’ll be praying specifically for you every day of this.

2. After your reading, take a moment and leave a comment on Facebook or Twitter with a thought that stood out to you, and end your thought with #NT60 (for New Thru 60). It’ll give us a way to track what you’re learning.

3. Don’t read just to read. Prepare your heart every day. Ask God to speak to you through your reading. Remember this: We don’t read the Bible for information, but transformation!

I love you and am excited to do this with you!

Here is a link to the PDF of the New Thru 60 reading plan. Thanks to my friend Dave Clayton for the help on it!

I’m back!

I’m back baby! I’m going to start regularly blogging starting September 1.

I took a break from writing this summer for one simple reason – to create space for God to speak to me. And boy has He messed me up. I’ve got some exciting things to share with you in the coming months. I can’t wait to share.

Access Church Staff Planking

At Access, we work really hard, and we play really hard. I really believe that the staff that laughs together, stays together. I LOVE these people. We have fun together.

Today, we planked. Let me know which is your favorite!

Synergy

What you accomplish in life is important. Who you accomplish it with is WAY MORE important!

I wanted to take a moment to brag on our team. We’re not a huge church… yet (but, stay tuned!). Our staff stepped up and pulled off a huge weekend with tremendous success. I took them to breakfast this morning. What an AMAZING time of sharing stories of God’s goodness to us. SO MUCH FUN.  I love these people.

Allow me a moment to praise them.

Than & Megan Graffam - are you kidding me. These guys are AMAZING. They’ve worked tirelessly to plan, work out details, advertise, and so much more. It obviously worked. Some 6,500 people showed up. Here’s the thing I love the most. This morning, as we were sharing stories, Megan said this, “There was SO much love behind everything we did. It was all to show God’s love in a fun, practical way.” I LOVE THAT!!! They had so many amazing stories about Lakeland’s Largest Egg Hunt and Sunday’s services.

Mike Burns – killed it in every way this weekend. He’s been working on media for weeks leading up to the events (including my favorite video of all time!), and he made this amazing opening for our new series “Coming Home.” SO SO GOOD! He’s been such a great team player. We couldn’t do Access without Mike. Period.

Jordan Rippy - amazing heart. He’s worked SO hard with us to promote and dream Lakeland’s Largest Egg Hunt up. Then, on Sunday, he and the band did an UNBELIEVABLE job of leading us in worship. There is something so powerful when Jordan leads “The Anthem.” Especially on a Sunday when we celebrate the fact that Jesus is alive, those songs become so much more than words. They’re life changing truths. I love me some Jordan and Kristin!

Jay Grafam – this guy gets it. Do WHATEVER it takes to reach people far from God. Jay led a team of amazing volunteers on Saturday to park over 1000 cars at the school. Then, he was there all day Sunday, creating environments for people to encounter God. I love his Twitter timeline. It pretty much describes the weekend. The latest Twitter entry makes all the hard work worth it.

Again, what you do in life is important. Who you do it with is more important. I’m blessed to lead with an amazing team. They get it. People matter to God, and we’ll do anything we can to reach them.

Amazed.

We’ve prayed for Easter weekend for so long now that it felt like it would never get here. It did and we were BLOWN away by God’s goodness to us.

There are so many huge “wins” to share, and I’ll probably share more over the coming days. Here is my attempt to recap a few.

LAKELAND’S LARGEST EGG HUNT
If you missed my post on Saturday, check it out. We were completely blown away by the turnout. We’ve prayed and worked SO hard to make this happen, and couldn’t believe that 6,500 people showed up. That’s ridiculous. We’ve heard so many stories of families who had a great time.

About One-Third of the Crowd!

I think my favorite part of the day might’ve been standing on the hill just before everyone could see the football field covered with 50,000 Eggs. Kids eyes got SO SO big when they saw that. It was worth it all.

50,000 Eggs Covered this Whole Field!

EASTER SUNDAY
Numbers matter to God, because every number represents a person in need of God’s grace. We had our largest attendance Sunday ever yesterday, but that number isn’t the most important. The real number that matters though is 5. Five people went public with their baptism, and we celebrated BIG last night.

Entire Family Baptized Together. A powerful moment.

Here’s my favorite story of the day. A family who is new to our church came Sunday morning. I didn’t see them in the first service, but I saw them walk into the building right before the second service, and walk out 3 minutes later. I was sure something or someone had offended them, and that’s why they were leaving.

Tears filled my eyes as I found out right before the second service that they  had received Christ in the first service, left, and the mom and daughters came back to sign up for baptism that night. Then, right before our 6 pm service (which was AWESOME), the dad asked if he could be baptized as well.

Last night, we baptized a whole family together. Many people in the room were sobbing. It was an incredible moment.

That’s why we do what we do.

That’s why Easter is so powerful.

That’s why the only word to describe grace adequately is “amazing.”

Blown Away!

Unreal. Seriously Unreal.

When we planned to host an Egg Hunt this Easter, we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. We started with the idea of doing a big 10,000 Egg Hunt. That didn’t feel right, so we jumped it to 25,000.

Then as I was praying about the content for the series we did “Bet the Farm,” I had this sense that we needed to double it. I’ll never forget Megan’s face when I told her that I thought we should double it! Priceless.

A couple months ago, we were hoping (seriously hoping!) to have 2500 people show up. That was the BHAG (Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal) we had set for ourselves.

We were BLOWN AWAY TODAY! Over 6,500 people showed up. Traffic was backed up for miles. We ran out of parking and seating. Wow. Just wow.

50,000 Eggs were gobbled up in just a couple of minutes. It was seriously pandemonium! A beautiful, crazy pandemonium!

It was so funny to think that we’ve worked on this, prayed about this, stuffed eggs, bought candy for MONTHS and in moments it was over… but boy was it fun!

One HUGE thing – our volunteers BLOW. ME. AWAY!

They are such amazing people with amazing hearts. Our whole church understood that we just wanted to do something fun to show the city that we love them. I sure hope they got that message loud and clear.

Tomorrow is Easter. We’re going to celebrate Jesus in a huge way at Access Church.

Then maybe we’ll take a nap.

Check out over 1000 pictures from Lakeland’s Largest Egg Hunt!

Just Ask.

Easter is a huge deal for the church. HUGE.

It’s huge because of what it represents and because of the opportunity it presents. People who will never choose to go to church any other Sunday of the year will choose to go on Easter… it’s become an American tradition.

Statistically, 8 out of 10 people will say yes to an Easter invitation. Also statistically, 10 out of 10 people will come if you BRING THEM! (Ok, I made that last one up, but it makes sense.)

Wherever you are this week, whatever church you attend, please have the courage to ACTUALLY invite someone. Here’s what I mean:

Have you ever said to someone, “Let’s grab lunch sometime” and not meant it? Or how about “If you’re ever in town, stop by!” We say things like this to absolve our conscience of any guilt. Most people invite people to church like this “Hey, you should come to church with me some Sunday.” Fail.

Easter presents an unbelievable opportunity to SPECIFICALLY invite people.

Access Church people, please step up and invite people to Lakeland’s Largest Egg Hunt and, more importantly, to one of our 3 worship services.

Easter is coming. Jesus is risen. Let’s do something significant!
